If Not For You

The ground had changed here. Gabriel, who had long ago turned his ears deaf to the earth, could sense this. It was heavy and pulled the weight of the air down. Air that still, even now, crawled into his throat and nose and filled his head with soot. Rain would wash this away, but it could not come soon enough. This he could sense, in that heavy air, and he prayed that one more storm would be enough. Anything to get rid of the stench.

Gabriel’s eyes bored into her face, but it was like staring into the ocean. He saw a thousand emotions, saw her shift and waiver, and he knew then he had made a mistake. The tone he had used was wrong, and his ears turned back suddenly, like a child. It hurt him to be so oafish when here before him was a woman as fragile and shimmering as glass. Suddenly, he became aware of the world around him, and spared a glance to the corpse that had been left for the elements. His feet moved, placing himself between this image and her, as if to be a shield.

Certainly, this he could try and be. “You found me,” he teased gently, sensing the distress in her body. “I told you not to worry.” But, like the sea, he doubted he had any control over her.
