After the fire, it seemed as if Silas was never going to get the smell of burning flora and ash out of his system. Though the fire had not reached the mansion and the coyotes inside didn’t have to relocate, the Russian had been having dreams about the fire licking at the edge of D’Neville. Since the boy had grown up by the ocean, fire had never been a plague he had had to face before. Now that it had been set intentionally to tear the ground out from underneath Inferni, it seemed as if the malicious idea just wouldn’t leave Silas. His nights were troubled by dreams of the fire reaching the second floor, and Silas unable to bring himself to get out of bed and avoid the inferno.
But it was a useless fear and he felt cowardly in mentioning it to anyone for advice. He couldn’t imagine what Rurik would say in response, and didn’t want either Liliya or Anatoliy to know what bothered him. Time, Silas assumed, would be the only cure. Eventually, the smell of smoke would seep away from his nose and his mind would find new things to worry about. Until then, Silas would deal with his irrational fear.
As he came into the mansion, Silas could tell that he wasn’t the only one home. Up above, movement was heard as clawed feet scuffled along the second story floor. Whether or not it was Halo, Silas couldn’t be sure. As he began to climb the stairs, however, the smell of smoke reached him. It wasn’t the same smell of the burning lands from weeks before, yet the sweet smell of cannabis in the air. It reminded him of the pack of cigarettes he had stashed in his room, though he knew it wasn’t the same. Still, Silas couldn’t help the flair of anxiety that rolled in his gut as the fog of smoke seemed to billow from the hallway.
