I can hear the sound of violins

The air gradually grew colder, the breeze stirring the surface of the lake before darting off to ruffle the field grass. Colibri stood still, watching absent-mindedly as the sky's colors began to reach a deeper, more somber palette of night. Red bled into purple, blue became a velvety indigo, and the gold seemed to streak into nothingness, making way for the pinprick stars to begin shining, feeble at first amidst the sun's dying light. It seemed unbearably lonely to watch the day end by herself. She had never been much of a nocturnal creature, loving her flowers and her gardening and her sunlight. She could hear some of night's creatures beginning to stir now; the fluttering of bats swooping after fleeing insects, and something much larger, rustling in her direction.

Colibri's earth-brown ears swiveled forward, peering curiously into the dimming light. She was greeted by a cheerful smile and a youthful voice, a stranger who had caught her unawares. Coli brushed the feathered strands of her mane from her face, self-consciously checking her own appearance before offering a meek greeting in response. "Oh, hello there! You're... going for a walk too? It's lovely tonight..." She twisted her fingers together before her, feeling a touch nervous despite the girl's clearly friendly approach.

It did not occur to her that the youth could belong to a neighboring pack; there was no one dominant scent about her pale fur, and her free-flowing mane had a feral beauty about it, unkempt but not disheveled. She appeared to be a wanderer, wearing a yellow dress that reminded her of something a former packmate used to sport.

And... as she chanced another glance at the traveler's countenance, Coli realized this was one of the prettiest faes she'd ever seen. There was something so delicate and exquisitely feminine in her appearance; having met precious few dogs in her lifetime, all of them male, she was quite taken aback by the collie's brilliant smile and captivating eyes. Her own smile faltered lopsidedly, knowing she would appear plain and dirt-brown by comparison. Anu was the only one who seemed to think otherwise... for a while.
