All sense of place and time was lost to the pup as he padded quickly along the beach. There were strong scents everywhere, ones that made him twist and turn his head in different directions to try and see who was nearby, but he never stopped running. These were scents heavy enough to keep a fire beneath his feet and make him run all the faster. They were so, so strong! He was afraid of whatever was out on this beach and in the surrounding woods, but the thought of home had kept his little paws going. Gideon thought that he was headed back toward the mountain that his Mama, three siblings, and he had come over to get to these lands. Everything here smelled so bad to him, though! Nothing smelled like home at all.
He probably smelled pretty bad, too. Mama had bled a lot and he had been very very close to her that night, snuggled up with Ascher and Mama for sleepy-time. For some reason, she had fallen asleep early after Grandma had come after them. Grandma hadn't been very nice to him...she had picked him up and almost threw him! She wasn't a very nice Grandma...he wouldn't talk to her any more if he saw her again.
His paws were gathering more and more dirt and debris as he went, sand, leaves and twigs sticking to the layer of blood that covered both them and a majority of the rest of his body. Most if it wasn't his. Gideon didn't know what blood was, though, or what it had meant. Mama's fur had been very sticky...that was what he remembered, and that his paws had made little squishy sounds in the grass as he had gotten up from his slumber the morning after Grandma had come and fought Mama. When he had looked down, in the bright light of dawn, he had seen all the black-red water. Never in his life had Gideon seen water like that before. Ascher had tried to drink some of it, but he had stopped his brother before he could do that. Reddy water wasn't good for drinking, he felt sure of it.
But now even Ascher was gone. Gid had turned his back for not even a minute and the smaller puppy had up and disappeared. They had realized after a while that Mama wasn't waking up yet, and his brother and he had decided to try and find their way home by themselves so that she could sleep some more. Maybe Ascher had found Shiloh and Saul on his way back there. Once Gideon found another adult from his pack, he would have to ask them to go back to Mama and help wake her up.
The really strong smells were starting to come all over again. It was day-time once more and the darkly colored pup could see pretty far off into the distance...from what he saw, the beach continued on and on. He wondered how long it went for...did it go on and on forever? Maybe it was time to take a rest. No one was around. He slowed down a little then came to a complete halt, his breath still coming in small gasps. It came slower and slower as more time passed before it was back down to normal.
Gideon took one more glance around before sitting down, turquoise eyes trained on the territory in front of him. He would rest for a few minutes before going through this place. If he saw other wolves he'd probably have to run real fast to get away, without Mama here to protect him. He'd have to get his breath back. After only a few moments of sitting, however, the blood-spattered pup was fast asleep, reclining down onto his belly in the sand.
