Under This Apple Tree

The Dreamer wandered through the orchard, blue eyes looking at the new buds. They were small, having just lost their white and pink blossoms, and told of the fruit that they would give in the next season. It was warmer early, well at least there had been a few warm days followed by a few chilled mornings. She hoped that the young apples would not suffer because of the cold spells. But there was so little that could be done if a frost did creep upon the lands and leave the weaklings damaged. She remembered, vaguely, of times in her youth. Her father grew all sorts of fruit and flowers, masterfully, and would always know when a frost was about to appear. He used to tell her it was in the Earth, it would whisper to him. He knew by the wind, the trees and the flowers. They all spoke if what was to come, and then they would build the fires. Bright lights that dotted the orchard’s rows. Fires that Anu had feared, for they would either save the crop or kill it. The tragedy had happened, once, when the wind was too much and the fire took to it like a drifting leaf. They lost too many good, aged trees. Their fruit and wisdom eaten away. Anu would not be able to build that fires that would warm these tree’s fruitlings, not like this.

The four legged creature walked down the long row, towards the Manor with her tail hung low. She was tired, but her mind yearned to keep moving forward. There was more fear in her now then ever before, more then when she had been hurt by Haku, more when she had heard that he was the alpha of Dahlia. More then when the barn had collapsed. There was a new, vivid fear that ruled her actions.

Savina always calmed her, rooted her back to earth and made it easy for her to believe all the things that she needed to know. She had to believe that things would go smoothly, that she would not loose the joy that she held inside, that she could carry them to term and until they where ready to face this world. The thought that she would be a mother, once more and to her own flesh and blood, caused light tears to well in her eyes. But she held them back, thoughts focused on the trees. Anu lay beneath the first tree that sat in the long row, a view of the Manor and of the rest of the garden in sight. It was so very pleasant. The sun was warm, but the shadow beneath the tree brought her great relief. Nose in the air she caught the Spring pollen scent, and she let her eyes close slightly. Thoughts of sweet apples, and small paws dancing in her mind.
