Under This Apple Tree

That post was beautiful. *sobs* 300+

The Colonel relished Springtime for the light and life it awakened. He had fared well this winter, keeping close to home and to his family where he had always felt safest, always felt the strongest sense of belonging. Even though the snowy months were as dark and unpleasant as they were year after year, the creamy-furred boy had not felt the same sadness. He owed this to his family, to Crimson Dreams. They kept him hopeful that new and happy things were always around the corner. Springtime reinforced this hope he had discovered, and amidst this year's blooming and growing, Kansas was the happiest he had ever been.

He had spent the morning since its darkest hour on the porch. Savina and the children were sleeping, and he'd slipped away quietly to allow them ample time to replenish their bodies without disturbance. The Dreamer loved relaxing upon the old mansion's front stoop where he could watch the scenery, witness winter fade into spring. He had paid close attention to the orchard, impatient to see the blossoms become tiny apples, but now they were only partway through their life phase, petals scattered across the grass below. His turquoise pools left the fruit trees to linger elsewhere for a long while, until he was not really looking at anything — he was rather feeling the energy of the sun and its Spring as it warmed his body.

After a measureless span of time (he did not care to keep track), the pale wolf glanced toward the orchard once more, and saw a shape in the shadows of the closest tree. Distinctly canine, the ash and earth fur was distinctly Anu, a picture of serenity as she lay among the fallen petals. Lifting himself up, Kansas left the porch and started toward his Lt. General at an easy lope, closing their distance in a few limber strides. His greeting was first a smile and a swish of his silken tail. Hello, Anu. They had not spoken together in such a long time, but he knew of her joyful condition from Savina. The snowy brute could sense her thoughtfulness, but he could only wonder what was on her mind.
