The weather was unpleasantly characteristic for the time of year. No longer the crisp of winter, not near enough the warmth of spring, the trail that she always followed between the Jungle and these woods seemed to be made up almost entirely of slush on thin ice on chilling water. And yet, the little city slicker felt compelled to make it back to the land of her childhood and before, for the same unexplained reason she always came. She was very content in her "shabby-chic" downtown apartment, acting as mutated ghost of the creatures that had dropped dead in the concrete world. But a part of her seemed to need to revisit Chimera's corpse from time to time. It was her mother's blood, she often thought while roaming between gnarled trees and forgotten landmarks. Or perhaps more accurately, it was her mother in the flesh that brought her here. Disjointed hopes and complicated memories, she always sent her senses in search. On the typical visit, they could only find ghosts--those of Misery as well as many others.

But this time, the signs were fresh and vivid. They didn't need to guide Poe there, though--much of her mother remained a mystery to the girl, but the location of Misery's camp was quite certain. An easy smile and a veered path, Poe made her way to the den her dead siblings had been conceived and born in, arriving in a matter of minutes. The warm smell of cooked fish on a cold breeze welcomed her before the wide-open door of the newly erected cabin did. Quiet and content to slip in without the fuss she often made, Poe walked to block the entrance and locate her mother seated inside. "Well, fancy seeing you here."
