Bris had no idea how much longer she could continue to fight off the mangy beast before her body would simply give out from exhaustion. Everyone had their limits, and no energy reserve was infinite. The white woman knew this innately, but she was determined to throw everything she could at the murderer before he took it all away. If she was destined to lose everything today, here where her sister had done the same, then she damn sure was not going without a fight.
Suddenly, by some miracle, her attacker got sloppy. Air filled her lungs as the weight of the monster was suddenly gone from her back, and her sticky claws instinctively reached for the ground to push herself up. Blood dripped down her chest and back from her stalker's fangs and claws, and she dared not look back as she forced her feet to move as fast as they possibly could. When she'd gotten far enough from where she went down, Bris spared a glimpse over her bloodied shoulder at her attacker. To her amazement, he wasn't giving chase. Instead he merely stood where he'd caught her, his wicked face plastered with blood and a gut-wrenching illusion of a grin. She didn't hear the words he uttered as she ran, but she didn't need to. All that mattered now was getting home to the life she'd nearly just lost.
