The silver-shaded hybrid had not expected this reaction—she knew it had been a long time since her last visit with Halo, but she hadn't thought such a thing would bring about direct hostility from the girl. Rather than rage at being shut out, however, the silver-shaded coyote felt only a terrible and pressing guilt fall over her. She had failed Halo, but Kaena was certainly not the type to hang her head in defeat and walk away.

The scarred hybrid pressed her forehead to the door, her coal-colored ears pressed back against her skull. “Halo,” she responded, thinking she might reason with the cinnamon-furred hybrid. She was cut short as the girl yelled from the inside of her room. “Halo!” the woman repeated, clearly taken aback by her granddaughter's attitude. Whatever she had expected, it had not been this. She was not going to leave, however, and she continued knocking, until the soft sounds of footsteps from inside the room caught her attention. Her knocking ceased, and she heard the click of the lock.

Kaena did not shove the door open; instead she opened it slowly, peering inside with a guilty and rather stricken look across her face. It faded quickly, however, as the silver-shaded hybrid looked over Halo, her body struck with distinctive signs. There was another smell in the room, sweet and just barely there—bewildered, the silver-shaded coyote looked from the Hydra to her bed, her eye falling on the small and squirming pile there. Though she had been a mother more times than she could clearly remember, the silver-shaded hybrid could not, at this moment, fully comprehend what she had encountered here—this was a great-grandchild, then, a child of Halo herself? Feeling rather weak, the hybrid walked to the bed in an almost wobbly, drunken manner, her coal-colored ears pricked forward in intense interest as she drew back the blanket, crying out in joy at the sight of the tiny thing.
