Heath meandered, his pace was even and at a calm trot. His nose was working the ground, testing each blade of grass, each bit of open soil. The scents had fallen, the trail lingering around the moisture that had collected at the base of the green undergrowth. Ears moved to the left, the sounds brought to him before the scent. He was downwind, improper for an actual hunt and in the path of something moving quickly.
The Marshal could tell the difference in hoof patterns, the difference in weight, the hollowed sound. It wasn't a horse, the sound wasn't heavy enough, and what would a horse be doing out here anyways? They stuck to the more open areas, the wild herds gathering in plains and fields. Without the use of his nose (for the wind only gave him what lay behind him) his amber eyes looked upwards, attempting to see what it was that came crashing towards him before it burst through the greenery.
The coy-wolf braced himself, and when the nose of the deer broke through the foliage Heath moved briskly to the side. Stumbling, Heath tried to keep his balance but fell to the side and then fumbled back to gain his footing. A blur came behind the deer, a wolf. The male rose with haste, attempting to follow.
