The taste of the meat seemed to sour on her tongue, and so with one more swallow, Rio could eat no more. Like Lucia, she left her meal to age in the sun, which put a frown on Toki's face. The fox was silent, though, content to rest beside Rio and pant in the hot sun of summer's end, his doleful brown eyes fixed away from the two wolves. Rio hated the long gaps of silence within hers and Lucia's discussion. In her mind, they were chatting away, as girls of the same litter were meant to do. The image comforted her, saving her from the tears that were waiting like spiders to scurry away. Perhaps in the future, she and Lucia would grow as close as she hoped.

Rio gazed at her paws as Lucia fumbled for the words that would answer her question. When Mati was unexpectedly mentioned, Rio looked up and into Lucia's jade eyes, recognition written all over her face. She had no idea until now that Mati and Lucia had encountered each other. For a second, she wondered if Lucia loved Mati as she did.

Rio's expression changed, lips turning downward into a small frown, brows raising slightly in worry. She heard her mother spoken of in a way she had not planned. Inferring that the "things" Lucia spoke of were not good, Rio swallowed the lump of dread that had formed in her throat, unsure if she wanted to hear the answer to the question she softly asked. What did she do? Afterward, she recalled the darkness that she had seen in Mati's face during their short conversation about Naniko. Maybe today she would learn why it was there.
