In the midst of his frustration and pain, the feline's tiny voice reached out once more. Bubbling rage still boiled in his chest, but the cat was in no way at fault; the cyclops, still holding dear to his throbbing, torn arm, cast a glowing eye over his shoulder at the small black thing. Had he still maintained the madness of Maluki, the cat would be ripped in two and either discarded or feasted upon by that point—but Jefferson, knowing his limits and using them well, simply held his jaws shut and allowed his freakish rage to subside.

With a wincing eye and scowl, he raised the arm above its normal level. Blood flow within it automatically regulated and the pulsating pain deadened. The brute inhaled a long breath, held it, and released as his gloriously scarred and ripped arm was pulled down from show. He leaned with it as if every muscle weighed double, a hollow look about his face as it surrendered to its sling across his chest once more and, with a last sigh, the brute turned around.

"I'm sorry," he grunted, green eye pointed elsewhere. "When the damn thing hurts, it..." He stopped himself, shaking his head. There were no excuses. He looked next at the book that had been punted and its demolished heap along the wall. The brute stepped to its side and reached for it, but found it collapsed into further wreckage at his touch. "This thing's wasted," he scowled, but began to collect the pieces nonetheless.
