The silver-shaded hybrid looked over both canines, noticing for herself the remarkable similarity between them. Though she did not yet comment on it, she had noticed it. Something about watching four generations of family flourish outward from herself, seeing herself reflected in children today—it had given the old woman a sharp eye for these sorts of things, and she peered from Sascha to Cotl, her single eye remaining on him as he spoke. The man seemed ambivalent about his fatherly duties, and the ashen coyote lifted her good eyebrow at this, though she commented immediately after, already seeing it fit to pass judgment—Sascha was hardly an adult, just barely old enough for his own adult rank. If anything, the youth needed his father and this clan.

“He looks like you,” the hybrid stated plainly, her golden-yellow eye burning toward the other canine. Though Sascha was no baby, the hybrid woman would not stand to see him entirely rejected, not after he had come from this same place as Cotl—far over the ocean and far over the land. “He can stay, of course. I hope you take care of him,” the silver-shaded woman said to Cotl, a certain severity lingering on her scarred face. With that, though, her job was finished, and she found it proper to leave them as it was. Cotl had not rejected his son—for Kaena truly believed the youth was the Imaginifer's child—just yet, and so Kaena could do nothing to intervene. If the dog hybrid did eventually choose otherwise, then the scarred old woman would act.
