He wished he could have promised her revenge, but Haku’s life had ended months ago. He regretted the words he had spoken—words that seemed to have startled her. Rage needed to be chained down and controlled. He wanted to forget about it; to push it far, far away into a corner where it would collect dust and one day cease to exist. He wished it could have been that simple, but he was not naïve enough to believe in impossibilities. He couldn’t change the blood—the very design of his being. Rage was worthless here anyway—he tried to tell himself this—for Haku Soul was no more. Conor was not a religious man, but if there was a hell, he hoped Haku would burn for all eternity.

Gabriel de le Poer killed him in battle.” Had he not been offered such grieving news in the form of a murdered half-sibling, the young leader could have smiled when saying these words. But no, the scene could not allow any smiles. He did not pity the pale female before him, but it was unfair that things had gone like this. Why was it that the innocent had to pay the price?
