The long days of winter were doing their share of wear and tear on her. She was a skinny thing now, more so than she’d been since childhood. It was this above anything that had encouraged her to find a place to live – she hated not knowing where her next meal was coming from. The girl stopped at the borders, brushing her wavy, black hair from her eyes. To sit or to stand? She decided to remain on her feet; wasn’t this more respectful? She wished she had something to carry… somehow, she felt like a pack of some sort would have made her look more dignified, and less like just a wild creature that the wind had blown in. She fiddled with her hands, twisting them nervously.

She hoped she would be of more use here than she’d ever been. She had been just a burden to her mother, nothing worth a damn. Of course, she couldn’t say the same thing about her sisters. They were a lot better than she was; she was just annoying, weak; something that just took up space. She could not help but believe that with one less daughter (herself), her mother would have lived. Her eyes watered, and she brushed a tear away from her muzzle with one crooked finger. No, she couldn’t be found crying there! Devnet blinked shamefully, leaning against a tree to wait.
