Though the sun shone brightly in a cloudless sky, the air was dry and chilly. The fur along his nape and ruff stood upright for the cold, as the canine was not yet used to the sudden temperature drop. Winter was already on its way. As Kansas walked the perimeter of Rabbit Lake, his gaze wandered across the vast blue plane that sparkled gold and sapphire in the radiance of the afternoon sun. He was fortunate to live so close by, free to relax by the lake whenever he wished. Water was beautiful, never failing to soothe the snowy Colonel. Rabbit Lake was no exception, with its small waves that crashed upon the green and pebbled shore.
Kansas stepped carefully along the bank, letting the shockingly cold waves just barely touch his feet. At last he found the perfect spot, a sandy patch nestled between two large boulders that had been smoothed by centuries of wind. There, he removed the guitar from his back and sat against one of the sizable rocks. A cold wind played with his fur as he set the guitar in front of him and examined it closely, trying to think of something to play. He had found the instrument completely by accident, but deemed it one of his most valuable discoveries. Music was with him always, be it a song or simply the chorus of noises that always existed around him, in the natural world. Perhaps, if he practised enough, he would become a skilled guitar player and make music for his family.
Sighing contentedly, Kansas lifted the heavy instrument in his slender arms and simply felt it, its weight, the smoothness of the wood. Then, closing his turquoise eyes, he let his hands touch the strings and sent a single, soft note into the world.
