This ceremony was Theodoric’s first experience with one of AniWaya’s festivals. Truthfully, it was the first religious event he had willingly attended in many long seasons. He hung back slightly, maintaining a solemn face in keeping with the nature of the occasion. There was an awkward moment when he realized the others had brought items to sacrifice to the newly relit fire. Theodoric felt that he had probably overlooked a key ingredient to the ceremony, but he had nothing with him at the moment that he was willing to give over to the growing flames. The Gatlvska hoped his lack of participation didn’t bring ill luck on the tribe during the upcoming season. He had little love for the short, cold days that filled the winter months.

Shortly after the Great Fire was renewed for another year, Dawali announced the feast’s beginning. Theodoric wasn’t particularly hungry, so he waited while other pack members helped themselves to the bounty of food prepared for the evening. The red-pelted chief began a tune on some sort of flute-like whistle, and the melody captured Theodoric’s attention. The music was unlike anything he had heard before, but he found the notes pleasant. He listened intently from where he sat, toes tapping now and then with the beat of the music. When his attention began to wander, he finally went to gather a bite of food from the feast before returning to the circle of canines at the great, fragrant fire.
