Xeris paused, staring out over the ocean in silence, as her ears suddenly picked up a sound. It was very faint, and mostly swallowed up by the sound of the waves crashing on the sandy shore, but there was a soft rustling noise that the white wolfess couldn't ignore. She turned to face the direction of the noise just in time to see another white wolf emerge from the rustling thicket and begin to walk toward her.
For a moment, Xeris thought that the stranger was her mate, or one of her children...perhaps even Xion. She felt her heart race at the possibility, and took a few steps forward cautiously to discern the figure's identity. It was then that a breeze blew in her direction and she realized that this wolf did not bear the scent of Phoenix Valley. Her body tensed momentarily, immediately wondering if this wolf was here to attack the Valley. Had she been in her right mind, she would have welcomed him as a potential new member, but with thoughts of the invaders in her homeland fresh in her mind, such an idea was unheard of to her. "Who are you?" she asked. "Do you know that this is pack territory?"
