His lip curled instinctively at the mere thought of it, but he really didn't have many other choices. With the bitter cold biting at his fur as he glided through the snow covered landscape, he ran. The soft glow of the moon lighting his way as he effortlessly jumped over a downed tree. " You have to. . ." he whispered to himself, though his voice sounded unsure. Debating his decisions out loud had been something he'd grown accustomed to over the past year. Since his exile from his previous pack he had little friendly contact with any other intelligent beings, which caused him to converse with himself more often then he'd care to admit. All that was about to change though, or so he hoped.

Perhaps he wasn't so upset about what he was doing as why he was doing it. He was independent and a strong hunter despite what some might deem physical handicaps. The increasing disappearance of prey in his hunting ground had been driving him closer and closer to pack territories. On several occasions it had brought him well within the hunting grounds of more then one pack. These encounters usually left him with an empty belly and a scar or two, not to mention a bad reputation. He knew that he wasn't intentionally trying to intrude upon others claimed grounds, but this was about survival. " Adapt or die. . ." he snarled, his voice sounding almost bitter as his casual run began to slow into a trot. The sharp ivory fangs contrasting against the midnight black fur of his muzzle as he began to more closely inspect his surroundings.

His nose lifted to the wind as he let the frigid air fill his nostrils. He could smell them now. He had caught wind of this pack several days ago almost by accident, but it didn't matter. He knew he couldn't survive at this rate without help, and honestly he did miss the company. He just needed a fresh start, but his stubborn pride made him dislike the idea of depending on others. The single golden orb that was his right eye swept cautiously across the snow covered clearing that was laid out before him. " As good a spot as any. . " he thought to himself as he neared the center of the field, and stopped. He had strategically placed himself upwind of what he thought was the majority of the packs territory. Any patrolling sentry would detect him pretty easily, though of course a simple howl would make contact easier. He wasn't interested in potentially alerting an entire pack of unknown wolves to his presence as he sat on the borders of their own territory.

No, he had learned in the past that this was a potentially fatal situation. Being slightly hungry and a little weak wasn't about to make him misjudge the situation. He took a seat on his hind legs, tucking his tail underneath him. Making sure to cover the "X" shaped marking on the tail well. Even though he highly doubted this pack understood the meaning behind the mark, he wasn't about to take any chances. Finally taking a deep breath, he settled into his spot on top of the snow. The field providing a dual purpose, allowing him to be vulnerable and non threatening but at the same time letting him know what was coming from a long ways off. . .
