Davyn had watched the stars for several nights before deciding which night would be the best evening for the workings he was planning. When he was growing up, his mother had always told him that the stars dictated how much power could be available, ready at his fingertips. He breathed; the salty air wafting from the coast cleared his mind, prepared him for the ritual ahead.

He had found a white candle untouched by the disorder that had so lovingly graced the human race, in one of the dorms in Halifax. He had been saving it for something, not knowing at the time what he had been saving it for, but the male had finally found a use for the positively charged candle. Davyn had walked a while to find the perfect spot for his workings, finding one out in the middle of nowhere, along the coast of the Quartz Shoreline. The lighthouse was within easy walking distance, if he happened to get cold, but at the moment he was more focused on his workings and how he wanted them to unfold.

Davyn gathered three rocks, of varying sizes, and carefully arranged them, smallest to largest, left to right. He dug a small hole to set the candle in, so that it would not tip over, and began the summoning of the elements. His methods were different than most Wiccan methods, but that was the way he had been taught, and that was the way he would continue to live his life. Davyn was truly Irish to the bone, stubborn as a mule when he had to be.

The first ritual commenced after the circle had been drawn, the elements invited, and the presence of the goddess was joined by that of the god. It was a gentle brushing of the wind, like a hand running over his head, which let him know that he could commence with the ritual. For a while, as part of the ritual, the male just sat, staring at the rocks, meditating on what he would change in this New Year, and what he might wish for. He grinned, already knowing what his wish was. But he would never tell. Davyn already felt that part of his wish had already come true; his thoughts wandered to the beautiful femme who occupied his thoughts most days.

He shook his head slightly, to clear his mind for the next working and to warm up his ears a bit. The cool air made them ache, but Davyn wasn’t ready to admit defeat and retreat to the warmth that awaited him at home. He lit the candle, focused his thoughts, and grounded himself, picturing a cord tying his body to the earth, filled with coiling energy. Davyn lost himself in the flickering light of the flame, found himself searching for answers, as if the flame could give him any information at all.
