The cold burns

It had hit like a tone of bricks. The calm before the storm had been eerie, a calm everyone just thought of as a nice break from snow and harsh winds. They had been wrong. They had all been so wrong. Tala was not one to expect the massive winds, the harsh cold and blinding snow to arrive like this. Nobody had seen this coming. Nothing was prepared, no food had been stocked and no water was sure to be kept thawed. Going outside to get anything wasn't an option. The cabin creaked from every direction. It moaned at her, threatening to give out but determined to stand tall. Windows shook and the roof creaked. The wind was seeping through like it was alive. Crawling in to itch at her skin like fleas. Why had nobody known? How many lives would the lack of knowledge cost them?

Tala had been asleep when it had started. She had been awoken by a branch slamming into the cabin's east wall. It had startled the living daylight out of her. It was then that she saw what was going on. White. Everything was a blur of white. Her jaw had dropped like there was weights attached. Her gut had done flips in every direction and her feet had become antsy. Surely this would pass in a few hours. Just a little storm. The dappled Djose woman didn't think this would last long. She was wrong.

Twenty Four hours was how long it had been since she had awoken to the mess. Sleep was little and light. The wind howled at her like a demon in her dreams. The fire was weak and small in her fireplace. How long would this last? How long could she go with the wood she had piled inside? The fire was barely big enough to heat her living room. That was where she slept, where she was living. She had blankets draped around her Lupus body at all times. Cloth shoved by the door to stop the demonic drafts from biting her ankles and destroying her precious heat. This storm was starting to get to her, She felt so alone. How she wanted to have another person here to talk to. Being alone, she was scared. Was everyone alright? Were the safe? Please.... she needed everyone to be safe.

Her ears were perked, black twitching to the moans of the wind and the groaning of the structure she lived in. It wasn't happy about what was happening to it. Frozen wood was fighting hard to stand tall against the earth's force. Tala was so thankful that she had this cabin. If she had been out in the open with nowhere to stay..... things would be grim. Her heart began to pound with the thought of the wolves who were out there. Oh god, please.... let them survive this.

There was an eerie quiet on the wind that made Tala's heart stop. The wind was howling but it seemed almost.... sneaky. Her eyes glanced towards a nearby window and she let her body slouch. She didn't like when the wind changed. Not in a storm. It took a moment for her to relax. The tri-coloured femme let out a soft exhale. Things would be ok.

It happened so fast she barely had time to react. A loud crashing noise and suddenly things were falling. There was a large object protruding through her roof, a portion of a wall had been knocked down with it and Tala let out a loud yelp of surprise. Her body spasmed into movement. Her body scrambled to get away from the object she didn't recognize as a tree hit with large force. Her paws desperately gripped at the floor to pull her body away. Her heart was going a million beats a minute and she ceased to breathe. Her claws clinked at wooden floors. The last thing she heard was a loud thud of debris. Then things were black.

Her body lay among singles and wood. Her body was still, her chest barely struggling to rise and fall to survive. The fur on the back of her head was a light crimson. She was bleeding, but not profusely. Her body lay half buried. Wood and shingles propped up enough to not crush, but pin. The cold flooded in like water. The fire was blow out and blankets were strewn about like paper.

Black minutes turned to black hours. The snow bit at her body like a snake. The blood was frozen. Surely, she would freeze soon too.
