He walked with fury in every step, tearing the earth apart from under him. Self-control forced him to abandon his mother to her den, to leave her in the self-misery born of her failure of a child. Yet Gabriel knew the fault did not lay with her alone. There was another who had failed first, abandoning the wretch of a boy when he was but a child. Through the snow and worn paths the coy-wolf stalked, his fur moving in time with well-toned muscle and against the blistering wind. Gabriel did not feel this. All he could see was the path before him, for his vision had narrowed as it so often did during those rages.

Each step in the house was deliberate, taking him past things he did not value, taking him to the doorway where he could smell her. It did not smell like the boy. He wondered, for a moment, if he even knew she was his mother. A rat scurried behind the door and Gabriel growled deep in his throat, frustrated. Halo loved those stupid things more than her own son, and her inability to care for him had produced a monster. Dimly, he wondered what heredity had led to such a thing—Halo’s, certainly, but the boy’s eyes were familiar in other ways…

Gabriel steadied himself, unwilling to cause a scene in front of his members. The Aquila had to be the rock. Even if he wished nothing more than to chase down the brat and rip his throat out. “Halo,” he said gruffly, a subtle order.
