The sliver of a crescent moon above cast a faint glow across the territory, shimmering against the icy waters of the Mirror Lakes. It was late, but Xeris couldn't sleep. Her white paws padded onto the layer of snow that remained on the ground as she exited the cabin, gently nudging its door closed with her muzzle before turning toward the lake. A slight breeze blew, and the white wolfess shuddered a little from the sudden chill. It didn't affect her much, though, and she continued on into the night until she reached the shore of the southern lake, where she sat in a relatively snow-free area of rocks and dirt by the lakeside.
It had been a month since the snowstorm and since her accident at the barn. Her wounds were healing nicely; a small scar on her forehead remained but it wasn't too noticeable. Ever since that day, though, she hadn't strayed far from the cabin except to answer Jefferson's call for a pack meeting. She hadn't seen the damage to the territory firsthand, nor had she spoken to Tala who she heard had been promoted to Geneva's former position of subleader. She assumed that at least some of the pack members knew she was injured and resting, or else they might think she had vanished again.
Xeris turned her nose downward, staring at her reflection in the water as she had on the night she returned to the Valley. It was still scarred, still imperfect, but it wasn't quite as jarring to look at as it had been before. She sighed, turning her head now to look up at the few stars that were visible through the intermittent clouds above, suddenly realizing that she had very little to do out here. Perhaps someone else who couldn't sleep would come along.
