For a man who best communicated physically, riding the horse provided him with something similar to the language of battle. He felt muscles speak to him. The horse was headstrong and full of a desire to prove himself, to show the speed and the power that he knew he had. Yet he respected his mother, however begrudgingly, and slowed to meet her gait. Ezekiel was pleased with this. It meant the horse could be trained. Some boys did not have this capacity—he had fought many a hot-headed brat along his journey from home and back again.

The hotel loomed ahead of him like a dark fortress, far different than the Mansion he had once lived in. Overlapping scents warned him of multiple wolves, setting the coyote ill-at-ease. He now understood her warning. If someone else thought Inferni had sent an armed warrior into their midst, he would be fodder in the wolves den. Ezekiel dismounted, and used the halter to lead his mount into the yard. Once the gate was closed, he was met by Alaine’s sudden request. It puzzled him, but he quickly recognized that there was more to her then he had imagined. This woman was smart. No wonder his father admired her.

Quickly undoing the straps to the stallion’s halter (they were similar to the ones fashioned on his quiver) he released the big animal and approached. Elvira glared at him and bristled, while Elijah wiggled excitedly. Large hands took the pair in arm and earned him a growl from the girl. Holding each in one arm, the golden-bronze coyote winced as Elvira bit down on one of his fingers. “She’s going to be a charmer,” he offered, whiskers curling as she held fast.
