Waking from her prolonged period of sleep had been terrible for the girl, and it had been awful enough to know that her best friend was gone from the pack lands. When he had been simply missing, unfound after weeks of searching, she had become certain that he would return sooner or later. Artemis had been sad for weeks because of her fall and his absence, but the anger had finally settled into her when everyone began to speak of his death. Denali wasn't dead, of that she was certain, and it angered her to know that everyone believed it. They all had to be stupid.
His growl was ignored, hardly noticed by the silver-painted princess of the Dreamers. Artemis had become immune to the anger of others, unmoved by the pain they might show in the face of her own. The boy's words, however, were not able to be ignored. Shock, indignation, rage. All were emotions that flashed in her dangerous gaze as she processed the words he spat at her in return. Cypress was calling her stupid for her accident, something that shouldn't have even happened in the first place. The anger she felt was different now, hatred for the problems in her life turning to a hatred for the boy suddenly.
So she slapped him.
The contact was barely anything, the frail girl having little strength in her entire body. Her muscles lacked use, and despite having been awake for some time now, she had not been eating well and had not tried to make her muscles accustomed to use again. She stared in shock at him, surprise etched in her features, as if she did not know who had slapped him. It hadn't been her, had it? Artemis did not recall doing it, but it had been her own slender hand that had made such light contact with his cheek.
