The boy's response was instantly apologetic, and Denver's tension slackened. Through furrowed brows he stared hard at the younger boy; despite his height, Denver expected to be treated with respect. He scoffed, crossing his arms and looking away. "Fine."
The strangely furred mutt stepped away from the tree, feeling oppressed by it's large trunk and low-hanging branches. Pale eyes surveyed the land, coming to the conclusion that it was quite as barren as much of the area he'd already traveled. "Not much out here, is there?" he wondered aloud, eyes narrowed in suspicion. The place was green and lush, but the tree cover was sparse. Such open plains meant weakness. He wouldn't blame anyone for avoiding it; he certainly wouldn't live here. "What else is 'round here? Anything interestin'?" he asked, his voice very nearly demanding. He wanted answers, and he wanted them now. Where was he to go next?
If this "Kingdom" could not meet his needs (something Denver was almost counting on already), he would need a backup plan. Unfortunately, his faith in this place at all had faltered upon his arrival. Most of it was nothing like the stories. "Where'd you come from?" he asked, turning back to the wolf-boy, icy blue eyes locked onto his. He stood close to him, inhaling his scent and appraising him, face coming inches away from the gray boy's as he moved to interrogate. "What's it like?" he asked, accented voice smooth and dark as his eyes wandered the stranger's body briefly. Wherever the rude boy had come from, Denver suspected it wouldn't suit him. Pack life seemed so tedious; maybe Denver should just avoid it altogether.
And yet, he craved the feeling of belonging. He craved it and sought it, but hadn't yet found it, so he remained unsatisfied. But the wolf-dog knew that it couldn't last forever. Eventually, he would find his place.
