The Hero's Heart

It did not take long for someone in the family to react, and though the others probably stirred in their respective rooms, Uncle Alder was the first form to take shape as he wearily plodded down the hall and came upon the mess. Robin's surprise turned into a sheepish grin as she watched her uncle's blue eyes follow the pile of books to the shelf and came to rest on the sight of her crouched unsteadily upon the top shelf. She studied his face. Was he mad? He was frowning, but sometimes when the grown ups frowned and she asked 'What's wrong?' they would say 'nothing,' so she really was not sure.

Well, either way, she wasn't about to let this adventure go to waste. As his outstretched hands reached for her, the squirmy little pup tried to slip away. There was really nowhere to run, though, and her uncle soon had hold of her. Her wriggling did not make it any easier for him to get her down, but she was small enough so her wormy weight wasn't too much to bear.

“Waaaaait!” She cried as her paws left the bookshelf, her tail lashing around to hit her uncle in the face (purely by accident) as she twisted her front half to hang on to the bookshelf. She dragged another book off with her, but canine paws were not very good at gripping smooth surfaces and soon her forepaws slid off of the shelf, too. In a final effort, she threw her weight forward and grabbed the shelf with her tiny, sharp little teeth. Now clinging to the shelf with her jaws and dangling between the shelf and her uncle's hands, she turned her eyes the best she could to look at him and said, in a very muffled voice, “I di'int ge' ny ook et.”
