Grasping one antler with the off hand, she ceremoniously raised the knife and then plunged it, severing the jugular and the windpipe in one stroke. The deer fell, a willing sacrifice for their needs.
Colibri took her share of the kill first thing, but Cercelee declined taking the leader's share. This perplexed Hanna, but she did what she was going to do, anyway. Using the knife, she removed the buck's heart and carried it several paces away. Utilizing her paws and the hilt, she dug a small hole and buried the heart, murmuring, "Thank you, brother buck, for your gift of meat." Then she returned to the kill and removed a section of thigh to chew upon.
