Mabu couldn’t help herself when she arrived here at the shoreline. She believed it was called Drifter’s Bay by the locals. Blinking at the strange feeling of sand beneath her paws, Mabu couldn’t help but bend down and feel the texture of the sand. It was grainy, hot from the sun, and very odd in texture and in color. Mabu had lived in the Great Plains up until recently. She had never seen sand or swam in ocean water before. Looking out into the crystal like waters she couldn’t help but feel that she had missed out on seeing it before.

Quickly walking over to the shore, she saw several strange creatures darting into their homes within the wet sand and water. She really wasn’t sure what they were. Were they edible? Did those pinchers really hurt? Why were they shaped funny? Quickly dismissing them, she gingerly stepped into the water and quickly noticed that it was cold and not unlike regular water. Then what was the difference? It didn’t feel different. Was it the taste? She had heard stories of how the water tasted different. Was it true? Crouching down, she steeped her fingers into the water and then brought them up and licked them. Grimacing at the huge difference in taste from fresh water, she decided that if she swam she would have to be careful not to drink the water. She highly doubted her body would enjoy it all that much.

Walking up and placing her hip bag in the dry sand and untying her long golden hair, she went back to the shore line. Wading into the water, just waist deep in and not very far at all, she really didn’t want to wade out too far. She wasn’t sure of any strong tides or if there were any ‘sea monsters’ out there to snatch her away. The water was cold, but it wasn’t unbearable to her. She was quite use to swimming in cold water anyway and she was way too curious to pass this up. Wiggling her toes in the sand underneath she decided the sand felt better underwater. Looking down into the crystal clear water, she gazed at the small fishes swimming to and fro. Maybe if she saw one that was a decent size, she’d catch it and see how it tasted. She didn’t usually eat fish, but she had one every once in a while if she felt like it.

Pushing off into the water she stayed near the shallow end, never venturing into really deep water. She was an ok swimmer, but she really did not wish to try deeper water alone. Besides she still was terrified of ‘sea monsters.’ Splashing around, her hair trailing behind her in the water, Mabu was enjoying herself. She hadn’t had the luxury of swimming in a long time and she viewed this as a luxury. Usually good swimming areas were already claimed. Maybe she would den somewhere close by that night. It would be nice to get in a good swim before taking off again tomorrow.

Glancing down into the chest deep water, she noticed a pretty colored something in the water. Diving under she picked it up and came up with a pretty orange ‘lions paw’ clam shell. She only knew what it was because she had found a picture book once with a shell shaped like this one. It was as big as her hand and had dark orange, light orange, and swirls of cream all across it. It was very pretty. Deciding to place it in her pouch, she began to wade back the small distance to the shoreline. She thought it was a great find to come across.
