Though Slade was a bit confused as to why Deirdre cut herself off when talking, the thought soon left his mind as they approached her den. It was certainly bigger than he had thought. Wondering how she had managed to be so lucky, finding a home this roomy, he shook his head as she pulled out the book. He didn't feel comfortable just walking into her den at first, but he took her smile as an invitation, which he accepted. He was a small coyote, anyways.
Slade listened in silence as Deirdre talked about the book. It was undoubtedly about plants; he could tell that not only from what she had said earlier but because of the faded drawings inside. Of course. He didn't understand plants very well, nor did he understand gardens. Hoping that this wasn't a guide to gardening, he subconsciously began to scan the page while nodding to Deirdre. "Old," he commented. "Sure is weird how it just got buried, nature or not. I'm just surprised that it's not more faded than this." Shaking his head again, he glanced outside at the quickly darkening sky; that was his only reason for wondering why the book was still readable.
Slade was not completely good at reading and did have a little difficulty in figuring out what the letters meant, but from what he could understand it wasn't interesting. Deciding he'd change the subject, he looked up at Deirdre. "How'd you find this? Was it just sticking out of the ground, or...?"
Looking back down at the worn pages again, Slade wondered if there was a particular pack leader and gardener who would be interested in something like this. Then he had to shove the thought out of his mind, surprised that he thought Deirdre would let him have the book that she had found. Whatever. Just a thought. Still... He let out a small huff; he hated how his mind drifted when he wasn't interested in something.
