Her excitement didn't help. Why had he dared speak those wretched words? Now he was certain he'd regret the offer. Slade tried to keep himself from standing and pacing as Deirdre's tail kept wagging. She could probably sense his discomfort but was ignoring it for whatever reason. At this point he just wanted to get out of here. This meeting had not gone as expected. Just because he still considered Deirdre a friend didn't mean that he couldn't want to hightail it out of her den as quickly as possible.
He tried to hide his excitement when the rain died down. Slade didn't want to offend her--after all, she had generously allowed him to stay with her to wait out the storm--so managed to stay relatively calm as he heard her speak. "It's not over?" Was that supposed to have a double meaning? Pushing that thought aside the oblivious coyote quickly nodded when the wolf mentioned he should leave. "Agreed. Can't have the pack wondering where I've been." The sentence was a total lie at best.
"Thanks for your hospitality," he said, dipping his head. "If you'd ever like to come to the border of the pack again to call me, you're more than welcome." Another offer he'd likely end up regretting; hadn't he learned his lesson from that first offer? He was digging himself into a hole that would be hard to get out of, and he was going to regret every second of it.
Without saying another word, giving a farewell smile to Deirdre, Slade left her den and started trekking through the muddy ground back to his own den in Cercatori d'Arte. For the rest of the day he couldn't stop thinking about her excited smile when he had given her his word of honesty, and was kept awake pacing the entire night.
