It seemed that she hadn't simply surprised herself, but Cotl as well, as the German fell apathetic and silent for several moments after the question was posed. A hand pulled from her side, confusion colored his multi-hued eyes and then he pulled away completely. She tried to keep a passive expression, unwilling to show the fear that had risen; though she hoped it wouldn't be so, she expected him to refuse. After all, who would want such a broken creature that couldn't truly love another? Cotl had her respect, her friendship, and oh she cared for him like family, but she had yet to identify love in herself for any man. Perhaps that was what caused him to balk at the offer of his own woman, her inability to prove love.
Though she had given up her faint hope, she remained still as he looked back to the crimson gaze of the de le Poer. And then it came. He began to speak, and it was in the first few words that she found her determination crumbling. Despite his admission that he loved the twisted Princess, he seemed to reject the idea, telling her to ask again when he was sober. A forced smile was left on her face, eyes closing to hide the disappointment. "Yes. Of course, some other day then." She knew she wouldn't bring it up in the future, but she didn't want to ruin the chance to spend the night with someone who cared and found it best to simply pacify the Imaginifer.
Her face fell away from his as her head rested on one thin arm, eyes opening to stare hard at the wall nearest to his bed. Her mind always returned to her foolishness. What had caused her to ask such a thing when she knew better than any how awful it could be? The proof was in her father, who had lost his mate to some other monster in the world and spent his days with outsiders; she refused to be such a pitiful thing. But perhaps that's why she'd gone to Cotl to begin with.
