Even now, he wondered what she might think to learn that the golden prince was one who truly had stained his hands with blood and lined his lands with the skulls of fallen enemies. There were savages within Inferni, monsters who would kill and tear. Alaine had cursed him for such an offense; he was branded a wendigo, a killer of children, a beast that consumed and swallowed whole that which it encountered. Many more would fall, of this he was certain—there were small, incomprehensible changes taking place under his skin and in his heart even now.
He lifted the girl up, instructing her on how to sit. Side-saddle would not work bareback, so he encouraged her to ride as he did. Once both passengers were aboard, Ezekiel swung himself up with a soft grunt. A squeeze and soft clucking noises were made, which Viggo responded to quickly. Though his trot was bouncy and Giselle made several exclamations about her fear of falling, the horse soon picked up a much smoother canter. The ground flew beneath them as he traveled south, towards Crimson Dreams, away from the dog-kingdom and away from his own home.
It did not take them so long, and he saw the disappointment in the girl’s eyes when he helped her from the horse. They exchanged farewells, and Ezekiel returned to his horse and began the long ride home alone.
