With a little earth and a touch of water

Amon pinned his sister in a squirmy, loud wrestle as their mother approached the boy on the edge of the lake. The scent of clay was easy to detect, though it'd been significantly diluted with water. She smiled — was he a potter, like she sometimes claimed to be? Perhaps not. It seemed like he was having some trouble, and it didn't seem like her presence was helping much. She noticed his ears fall back some, a sign he was anxious or uncomfortable or who knew what. She was unfamiliar with the idea, she didn't think she was frightening or scary, but it seemed like others did. Oh well — his tail still thudded the ground, so she couldn't have been that unpleasant.

He was trying, and it made the woman's face light up despite his clear uncertainty. He was Cypress, and she was impressed that someone else was even trying to make something from a chunk of clay. Without asking, she took a seat near the boy — "'m Krystalle. Horzana." — and leaned over to study the medium he had. It looked as though the clay he'd managed to find was unsuitable to the task. Disappointing. "Y'know, you might not be able to make much with that — where'dya get it, mi querido?" Clay had been relatively hard to find in the desert, but it was easy enough in the new world. There was a swamp in the south, and bog clay offered the best canvas without having to add much to it. Silently, she wondered if she had any left in her house.
