For random names, I really like searching through this for cool words in dead languages. Likeee... let's search "dread" for example. I like: rædan ("to advise") and adrædan (ontraction of ondrædan "counsel or advise against") both, personally. But I am a sucker for any name with ae or æ. >_> This is long as shit and has some really, really awesome and obscure-ish names.
If a character is emerging from a particular culture, e.g., Eterne, I try to find something that would fit with that culture, like for Eterne it'd be Nahuatl (Aztec language) words, Spanish names, and perhaps also the occasional Catholic saint.
This is more about culture/background than naming, but if you're interested read on.
Wikipedia really does have a lot of interesting lists for just about everything... for an American character, here's a bit from Wikipedia's page on American folklore. Here are a few links I've collected that I found personally interesting: bloodstoppers, hex signs. :3
