Her skin beneath silver fur felt warm from the boy’s lingering touch. Ears still flattened against her skull, shrouded by wild chestnut curls, Ever continued to pay rapt attention. Saul’s face was contorted in a delicate mask of confusion, his maw set in a line that looked as if it should have been speaking. Once she spoke, it only took a minute for her words to sink in to the young apothecary’s growing expanse of knowledge. Something must have connected inside his mind for his emerald gaze brightened in a somewhat enervated response despite his soft head recognition.
His next question came as a slight shock. She recoiled slightly, angling herself towards her companion as if ready to flee. He was trying to help, Ever reminded herself again, keeping her face shadowed and her guard up for another moment. The silence stretched until it was just before the length of being uncomfortable.
“Once. It was unplanned,”
The silver hybrid murmured, her memories trailing for a moment. Why would the other wolf need to know? She hadn’t been in heat, the mating was fueled by passion and desire. Suddenly, Ever had her own break through. Was Saul suggesting she was … pregnant? Her mind shut down for a moment, abandoning the girl in a field of blackness. Thoughts swam in a shallow pool of fear, disconnected from her body, now left frozen a shaking in the light of the forest. However, she recovered with ill awakening and felt a flood of emotion. Ever wanted Saul to tell her he was wrong, she wanted it strongly and yet continued mumbling more words to the flame.
“There was … was another … time … when we went … went on the trip … I … he,”
She shook her head placidly and tore her gaze down to the grass, unable to continue. There was a small hope perhaps she wasn’t. That Saul was wrong in his theories. She grasped the hope. It was all she had.
