A Shot in the Dark

Sacrilege trotted on, her tail gently swayed behind her as she took her time straddling the border between the Halcyon Mountains and the Drifter Bay. She had covered quite a bit of territory in the last few weeks and had narrowly avoided some pretty scent-heavy terrain, so in her opinion the journey had been successful so far; however, the most important part was yet to come. Something caught Sacrilege’s attention as she ambled on and so she stopped to raise her head and inhaled deeply, her lungs filling with the scent of a nearby pack. She had already passed by the territory of a different pack, but their scents were mixed with the heavy smell of iron. These scents were much more welcoming. She was close. She estimated she was about half a mile from a pack’s border just from the strength of the scents alone and so a decision needed to be made. Would she continue on into their land or would she wait for them to come and find her?

She had been travelling for quite a while and even though it appeared she knew where she wanted to go, deep down she really had no clue. Her sister was gone, really gone, and a part of her was dead as well. She left her other siblings and her mother behind a long time ago, for reasons even she wasn’t sure of, and throughout this journey from Quebec through Nova Scotia she realized she did need others, even if she wouldn’t admit it to anyone else. As she reached what she thought to be the border to this pack, she took a few steps back and squatted. By leaving her scent here, she knew they would smell a foreigner and come and find her. Better they find her on the outside of the pack’s territory instead of intruding, she thought. She took a few more steps away and backed herself against a nearby tree, wrapped her tail around her body, and rested as she waited patiently for someone to appear.
