He rolled to his side abruptly, scrambling to his feet within the small den. His heart thudded so loudly in his chest that he was sure he heard its beats echoing from the den's dirt walls, and his head hurt with an automatic headache, the kind that came along when you were already hurting elsewhere. He wasn't sure what he had been dreaming, but he felt sick to his stomach, a combination of loneliness and fear tightening around him. Kansas was relieved because, after all, it had been just a dream. But he'd been tired lately, his sleep interrupted often by these nightmares.

It was early morning -still brisk, the sky a soft shade of blue-gray. Iskata was out, perhaps off to explore the surrounding area, or to find something to eat. They'd been in the den for a few days now, together, of course, but he still felt a sense of worthlessness that came with the territory of being a loner. Once he'd lost the jitters of a nightmare's aftermath, Kansas yawned widely, immodestly, and followed the weak shaft of light borne of the morning, out of the the den with the hope that his mother was nearby.
