The subject of Alder, their father, and their mother’s capture was obviously a sore one; Artemis wished she had been smart enough not to ask questions about it. She could tell that it was bothering him and she knew she should have let the subject drop. Better late than never, though, she thought to herself as she decided not to encourage the conversation. If Cypress really wanted to talk about it more, then he could continue with it, but she was going to let the subject drop now.
Summer was coming to an end, but swimming was something the silver-painted princess had come to enjoy greatly. She had taken it up in the beginning of the summer when she had been keeping to herself for her only company. Cypress seemed a bit startled by the suggestion, but he excused himself (for what, she didn’t realize until after) and he seemed willing to give it a try, anyway. Artemis stood, stretching her arms over her head with her hands clasped together, arching her back slightly while she waited for him to return, enjoying the stretch of muscles.
Cypress returned in a form that the Consul’s daughter had never seen her friend in. Her arms dropped back to rest by her sides and she looked at his two-legged body for perhaps a moment too long before she began to wade out into the lake. The air was still warm and the water was refreshingly cool. Artemis waded deeper into the lake until the water rested just below her waist. She turned to face the shore again, looking to the prince of trees with a pleased smile. “It’s nice.”
