Vesper was relieved when Noir gave her a look and addressed her as a comrade, and she sat quietly as the pale leader explained to the apparently peace-worshipping male who they intended and didn’t intend to harm. The frosty edge to her voice as she finished did not go unnoticed by the coywolf or the crimson-throated male, it seemed; he looked less cocksure, which made the hybrid glad. Something about the male rubbed her the wrong way, despite his pursuit of peaceful ideals.

And when he explained how odd it was to hear them talk about war with morals, she snorted with blue eyes falling to the blade he held. Apparently he knew how to defend himself, at the very least—and if he was so honorable as to want peace for all creatures, why would he be rankled by their suggestion? Perhaps he was simply selfish, wanting to protect only himself and perhaps his pack, but in that case, she wished he’d get off the high horse. After all, Ves herself had what she considered a healthy dose of selfishness, and while arrogant, she didn’t go around preaching what she didn’t practice.

The male who’d pledged with the sword spoke up, defending the Ichikan and reaffirming his loyalty to the group. It appeared the males had strong trust in each other, making the female feel singled out again. Sure, she spoke with Noir before and had met Zalen, but the latter hadn’t been on business and the former wasn’t an especially strong bond.

But her pride wouldn’t let her walk out on this.

She kept silent even as it was pointed out this Jaden was skilled with weapons, her eyes instead lifting to Noir. Despite the equality expressed throughout the group, she felt that the older woman would make the final decision. Ves might not have wanted him around, but she wasn’t going to refuse someone based on the inkling of a bad feeling, either.

“Regardless of who’s a part of us…we need a basic idea of how to go about this,” Vesper said. It was an obvious statement, though from her tone it was more of a question—wondering what Noir had planned. If the woman had nothing, they could certainly discuss it, but they wouldn’t make bold decisions to go after the secretive Salsola without some way to accomplish their mission.
