OOC: It’s a little long... =) Words – 800+

Fire tending was something Jaden did very carefully. When he first leaned how to build a fire his teacher had been Uva Atka’s very best Flame Keeper. Jaden remembered that man easily. Half the Alaskan’s body was covered with scared spots and intimidating tattoos and the other half with rich brown fur. He went on to explain in a one of their later lessons how dangerous fire was. First, he prodded Jaden and his brother with red hot sticks so they new the pain of a fiery mistake then went on to tell the story of how he had once caught himself on fire. The Flame Keeper’s description of melting flesh and scars to prove it easily put a permanent caution on the care of fire. With respect, flame was tame. With arrogance, absentmindedness, or disrespect, it could a very dangerous foe.

Needless to say, there was a well built fire pit for the average sized fire, composed of stones and broken bricks from nearby homes and a large area of mitigated dirt around that. The fire itself sat in the middle of what had once been a lawn during human times. Now it was now an overrun and plainly weed-filled square that did a lot to aid the home’s ancient look. Jaden planned on using this pit regularly, perhaps to show Verloren how to build and contain a fire or to have a nice dinner like this one every so often.

The Ichikan eyed his failsafe as Verloren appeared from the shadows – a filled five gallon blue plastic bucket that sat only a few feet away from where Jaden was tending the fire with a few other cooking and serving tools. It was there just to be safe. Having carried it from the nearest river (which was not very near at all), Jaden quickly realized just how difficult it would be to keep water on hand.

He gazed at Verloren who was now seated on the opposite side of the fire. She was keeping her distance from it and that was instinctual. It could be a while before she felt comfortable around the crackling red beast. The girl was brave though and seemed to trust that she was either far enough away or that Jaden was a good enough tender to keep her safe enough to eye the surroundings. Through the flickering shadows it was difficult to see how she absorbed the deserted seen. He knew she had to be a little shocked with such a transition. Having not lived in human dwellings himself, Jaden was still getting used to it.

Just before he was about to ask about it, the she wolf piped up with one of the accented questions she always seemed to have. For flavor, Jaden said simply.Cooking the meat gives it a different taste. He lifted the bowl of crushed sage he had, one of his favorite spices, and gave it a little shove in her direction. You can add things too, like this. It’s called sage. With an interested look, he waited to hear her observation of the spice.

Turning his attention back to their dinner a minute or two later, he could tell by the way it smelled that it was done. Juices from the large peace of deer flank ran off its edges and tumbled into the flame below, causing a hiss or two every couple of seconds. The flank itself was now a fine browned-grey color with little speckles of green sage leaves here and there. Alright, watch out now. This will be hot… With a little bit of difficulty, Jaden reached around the edges of the fire and took both cool ends of the spit in his paws. As he lifted, the man’s firry chest came within singeing range of the flame’s curly fingers. He could smell his fur burn slightly as he cleared the heat’s range with a heave. Then he was stuck. How to serve the meat had not been part of his plans until now. He stood there for a second and scolded himself for not thinking ahead. Looking along the spit and at the meat only inches from his fur, he quickly decided to use the spit itself to serve off of, plunging one end into the ground by his feet. It stuck strait up and the meat sagged but didn’t slide off its cooking pole into the dirt below.

With a sigh, Jaden patted the warm spot on his chest where the fir had slightly singed and fetched his dagger from near the plastic water jug. Come here, he motioned toward Lost. Try this, but be careful because is still quite hot. The redwood handled dagger’s blade sliced neatly and easily through the cooked and tender flesh. Jaden left a fine sized slab hanging from but not completely cut off of the roasts whole. Pink shown under the meat’s grey in the fire light and begged to be torn into. What do you think? He asked, turning to put the last spit of deer meat on to cook.

Jaden does. "Jaden speaks." Jaden thinks.
