The call was distant, but Sunki heard it clear. It rang in her head like a bell, and that bell was an alarm. She rose slowly from her seat by the window. "Nayati?" she said equally slowly as she kept staring at the window. "Nayati?" she said louder, panic rising as she turned and ran to her supplies. She flung the satchel around her neck and filled it with her emergency supplies; bandages, salves, and cloth. She looked at her brother with fear, before racing out the door. It was all of a minute for her to untie Donoma and mount her. Her body still ached, phantom pains, but Sunki knew that she had to ignore her desire for sleep and rest, especially with the weather like this. Something happened and she knew she had to go. Nayati could follow as he pleased, but he had the kids to worry about and she was the one who had the training.
But what she came upon made her own heart race, as she dismounted Donoma. Una had appeared, coming in through the trees. The pale woman could not tell what the doe thought, for she seemed obscured in the rain. Liliana's horse stood near a young man, dark as the night. Sunki's heart fell, but she continued to get close to them, even though the sinking feeling was overwhelming and dread was almost painful.
"Adanvsdi. Move," she ordered, her voice faltering ever so slightly. Regardless, the young man moved, giving her space to see what had happened. She knelt beside the stranger smelling of the Dreamers, even in the dampening rain. The boy had adjusted the woman's hair to see her face. Sunki put a shaking finger to the woman's neck and stopped breathing. Her hand fell beside the woman's head, and she felt the rock below it. It was easy to know what happened. But she could not believe it. "Duhasata.. Duhasata..," she repeated, putting her hand to her lips to cover her mouth. Tears began to fall, mingling with the rain. "She's gone.. Lili is gone.." And her thoughts went to the two children, to her niece and nephew, to her brother, who had just lost a mother and a lover.
