the thunder of the drums

I don't think we've had a thread together since like... Never Cry Wolf. o:

Dresden had gotten used to solitude during his months of travel. It had been a difficult change for him at first, growing up in a well-populated community, always spending time around his family or the other warriors-in-training. Sociality was something that life in Kobol had promoted and encouraged and as an outgoing youth, he had flourished there. Yet since being forced from his home, the male had seldom stayed with any group of canines for more than a few days at a time. He’d tried to convince himself that the solitude was better for him now, and there were times when he almost believed it. Still, the countless days with only Stranger as company had made the once-outgoing husky more withdrawn. Sometimes he felt like he was beginning to lose his touch around other canines. He wasn’t sure if he should consider that a good thing or not.

It seemed that the warrior was not destined to endure another solemn and lonely day today. As the stallion continued on at a subdued pace, Dresden picked out the familiar sound of hoofbeats in the distance. He sat up, ears and eyes alert and searching out the source of the noise. Moments later he was approached by another canine on horseback, a husky like himself. The sight nearly had Dresden grinning; He hadn’t seen another of his kind in some time. The stranger’s scent told him that he belonged to the nearby pack—of course, just Dresden’s luck—but he didn’t appear outwardly tense or threatening. The friendly wave the other male offered put the warrior at ease. Good. Maybe he would be able to have another sane conversation from someone around here. Those almost seemed few and far between for him.

The warrior offered a wave of his own, signaling for Stranger to match the pace of the other horse. The stallion complied, but gave a brief snort, eyeing the mare. “Hey,” he said, icy eyes meeting the bi-colored orbs of the stranger. “Nice day for a ride, huh?”
