The canine seemed surprised for a moment after Element spoke; many and most encounters with the speakers of High Speech acted this way, and he wasn't surprised nor was he interested anymore in knowing why this was the general reaction - it simply was. He had long accepted that, and it didn't bother him like it may have used to bother him - he knew that most felines were speakers of the Low Speech rather than the High; just like he would be surprised at meeting a bit of prey or lesser creature that could speak High Speech, he could imagine that a canine would be equally surprised at finding the smaller and slimmer feline to be able to communicate. Before long, however, she spoke back to him and he smiled for a moment; life was continuing as normal and the speech she gave, rather than questioning, was apologetic.
"Not at all, he said, ignoring the bird that tore bits of meat off of the freshly killed hare. "Not at all. It is nice to meet you, X'yrin," the male cat said softly. "What brings you and your nameless companion out on this fine day?"
