He probably would have saw the woman, being in optime and sticking out like a yellow daisy in a field of green, but his eyelids were already more than halfway closed and was not focused on what he saw or heard. But, as the girl let her presence be known, Mordecai jerked awake, fumbling backwards into the tree in surprise. He gave a vigorous shake of his head, and turned green eyes still round in astonishment to the wolf who greeted him. The teen was even more startled to see that the stranger was crouching on two legs, and for a moment, he thought back to the rumors of Luperci that enslaved feral wolves and felt a rush of fear. But, he made himself calm down, knowing that if she really wanted to take him away, should would not have awoken him, and by the smile on her face, she did not look the type to spirit away canines.

“Hey,” the dark boy replied back after composing himself, though he still regarded the girl with wariness. He noticed that her foreleg—arm, whatever they called it—was covered and splinted, and guessed that she was injured, and settled down a bit more once he realized that fact, seeing her less and less as a threat. “Name’s Mordecai,” he continued, “What’re doing out here?” Usually, he was not this upfront, but his curiosity got the best of him; he wondered if she was on a junket, or if she was searching for something or doing some sort of business trip.

He blinked as he noticed that perhaps he was being a tad bit too blunt, and quickly added, “Ah! Sorry, I did not mean to seem rude. Just wondering, you know? What’s your name?” Formalities, maybe, could ease the tension of sudden situation for the adolescent.
