Should have stayed home

Dated in the winter near Saxif's due date.

A lot of this is just guess on how I see her pregnancy going and how Shandom and Saxif's friendship might go... lemme know if I need to change anything. Sorry for epic length lots of character development XD WC: 700+

Saxif was carrying her bow over her shoulder. Her uncomfortable steps were but a distant worry to the delighted female. She had been feeling overwhelmed by the constant watch and worry of her friends. The thought of feeling like she had not hunted in weeks was driving her mad. Everyone was just waiting for her, expectant of her. Finally even with the swollen belly and aching hips the female ventured from the pack land against better judgement. Throughout her pregnancy it had been clear that her maternal instinct was a bit off... she also knew so little about birth. Sure she knew those who gave birth but their tales of it often fell on deaf ears. Advice told to a distracted mind of a cooped up hunter.

This was not her thing; she never thought she would ever be a mother. If she had recognized her first heat she would have stopped all chance at procreation but she had not recognized it and now here she was about to become a mother. She didn’t know how long she had left before they would arrive looking up to her hoping she would be their all. This was what worried the female the most... could she love them, could she really be a mother? She did not know and it frightened her immensely. Her own mother didn’t love her... maybe it would be passed down to her. She did not know.

She did look forward to one thing about parenthood and that was the teaching. She would get to teach her children everything she learned since coming to these lands and Leon would teach them so much more as well. They wouldn’t grow up wondering why they are different, why their lives were so entrapping, they would grow up free to be who they were destined to be. Saxif paused for a moment her back aching. She rested her weight against a tree. Who knew being pregnant took so much out of you. She hated being pregnant, hungry all the time, sick at the same time, slow and unable to do so many things. She knew she had to take today easy, she just wanted to track and kill something anything even if just an unlucky squirrel crossing her path.

The huntress pushed forward watching listening with excitement. She missed this so much, just her free alone and hunting. She drew her bow at the sound of slight movement in the distance. She heard the crunching noise of a small creature and smiled. Finally something to track in this thick white wasteland... she started to follow the small prints her steps were far too heavy to be her usually silent stepper. In winter she often climbed trees but alas the belly before her kept her from that. She would just have to be patient.

As she tracked the little white thing that went about its business as though it wasn’t being followed Saxif thought. She thought of her friends most of all, how these pups would put so much between them, she wondered if Leon would treat her differently. And if he did would it be better or worse than what she enjoyed now? She also thought of Shandom, feeling as though he most of all would take this the hardest. The arguments were becoming far more frequent, she felt like she had to constantly reassure him. She understood and for the sake of her friend she did not mind reassuring him.

Finally the tracks were indicating he was nearly done his duties and would need to be taken out. She gazed about and took a slight guess that where the skeletal forest changed to the thick pines would be his destination to home. She slowly carefully stepped toward the thick brush and sure enough. A little white rabbit peeked carefully about behind a tree. Saxif froze knowing her own light fur would blend within the white surrounding. She smiled and drew her bow with such fluid motion the little thing would not have seen it coming. She pulled back the arrow and released just as the rabbit darted. She knew rabbits well as a light squeal could be heard before silence. She grinned taking a deep breath feeling complete. She would go home satisfied. She walked over to the bunny setting her bow against the trunk of a pine before awkwardly kneeling before the rabbit. She started her prayer of thanks toward the bunny as her eyes slightly closed.
