Woot! / 442

It seemed that her wanderings from Inferni went farther and farther, though it was more of a return to normalcy rather than a change for the former loner. Vesper liked being out and exploring again, accompanied by the thought that she could return to a “home” if she wished rather than having to scout out a suitable place to rest. It was the easy way out, but she was beginning to see the advantages of having a clan and a static den within guarded territory.

She headed northwest from the borders now, walking through the plains. She’d already passed the fields of dying flowers and turned her sights now on the river winding in the distance—probably one whose origins were at the falls, if her memory was correct. The thundering cascades had frightened her, but she wasn’t as flighty at the thought of swift water now that she was on more or less level ground. It would be difficult for her to lose balance even in her two-legged form, which she walked along in at a careful pace.

Eyelids fell slightly over sky blue eyes as the coywolf wondered where today’s journey would take her. She figured that she could perhaps find a way to gather fish from the river, even if she had to resort to lying on her stomach and clawing underwater, but her thoughts quickly flashed from food to curiosity as she spotted a fire in the distance, as well as what looked like a wagon. Had a traveler come from across the mountains?

The chance to speak to another loner who had experience outside of Nova Scotia drove her onward. She loped with new ease across the field toward the riverside, where she could see now that a table and fabric-covered shelter accompanied the fire. That sure is a lot to bring with you, she thought, wondering if this person traded for a living. Vesper wasn’t used to having any personal belongings, let alone a traveling home. She’d always had to make do with her own wits and whatever the earth could produce for her—hands not being one of those things.

Perhaps against her better judgment, without quite as much of the caution she would have had as a loner, the slender tawny hybrid trotted closer to where she saw another canine knelt by the flames. The stranger was adorned in a strange outfit, though that was normal compared to the stripes of bright color on her cheeks. Eyes widening slightly, Ves came to a halt and cleared her throat.

“Hello,” she greeted, ears turned back uncertainly until she noticed the pot. “Are you cooking something?”
