Vesper was satisfied by the quiet gasp midsentence, though she growled softly in agreement. She couldn’t even begin to imagine what the white woman had gone through to bear all these scars, carry this dark uncertainty and depression about her, but it was not her place to ask unless the other spoke. “You are all the more beautiful for surviving,” she murmured instead, slipping the pads of her fingers lightly across one of her silvered scars.

And she meant every word she said, even if she was not especially emotionally invested in this beautiful woman. She had seen too many canines simply quit, roll over and let their life dominate them, or worse yet commit suicide because it all became too much. The strong survived through worst turmoil and came out even stronger because of it. It took willpower, and it proved the worth of any canine’s right to live.

Whimpering quietly, affectionately, she nuzzled against the woman’s neck then bent one of her legs slightly, lowering herself so she was nose to chest with Gemma. Her tongue swirled against a nipple, her fingers giving the other breast equal attention before she pulled back and snaked her arms once more around the other’s long and skinny form. Gently, she pulled, hoping to bring the two of them down onto the sands.
