Turnstone spooked the horse instead of injuring it, throwing his target off. Turnstone didn't want to hurt the horse if he didn't have to; after all, he wasn't planning on eating them so it would have just been a waste.

Turnstone moved and ducked around the horse's flailing hooves, minding his way and trying to give the hulking creature its berth. He did not fancy a hoof in the face especially when his fight was not with the horse, but its rider. The wolf righted himself soon enough and seemed to find his footing. He began to speak, and at that moment -- not caring for a rambling tirade in another language -- Turnstone rushed at the wolf, weapon in hand.

When the wolf finished his words, he threw himself at Turnstone. As the wolf approached Turnstone, Turnstone took his club and tried to smash it into the other wolf's side and break his ribs. With this particular club, if he made contact, he could also use the pointed end to drive it in to the wolf's flesh and damage him even further.
