Barrett knew nearly nothing of medicine, but he did know plants. He'd grown very familiar with the loamy aroma of unearthed soil and the invigorating scent of freshly plucked herbs. Here amidst the subdued odours of a hibernating forest, they certainly stood out. It seemed like a queer time of year — not to mention time of day — for such things; apart from the greenhouse, most of his horticultural work was on hold for the season. Was he missing out on something?

He crashed noisily in the direction of the herbalist; when it came to strangers he preferred to keep surprises to a minimum. Some folks reacted poorly no matter how you approached them, but even sane, rational canines could be (rightly) unnerved if you slunk through the shadows, stalking them like a creep. Between the pervasive stench of marijuana and the exaggerated crunch of dead leaves, he figured he was probably ok.

Before long he spotted the jackayote. The medic's diminutive size threw him off; having never seen a jackal before, Enkiel looked like a super small coyote. With a cloak. What? He ceased his advance much sooner than usual, looking a little perplexed but not discouraged. His tail swept low to the ground as his ears flitted back and forth, displaying a mixture of placidity and curiosity. Hey, he started. You were collecting plants? he called through the darkness, tone neither incredulous nor accusatory, but mostly intrigued and perhaps somewhat confused.
